Zephyr

Technique: Scagliola

Sculpted art piece composed of ultramarine pigments, lapis lazuli, and lazurite.

A bit of history:

From lapis lazuli, the ultramarine pigment was traditionally extracted. Once purified, it was once sold at the price of gold, until the chemist and pharmacist Vauquelin discovered in 1814 the formula for an identical pigment, synthesized by chance in the soda furnaces of the Leblanc process installed at Saint-Gobain. Vauquelin analyzed this pigment and concluded that it was identical to the lapis lazuli previously analyzed in 1808 by Clément and Desormes.

The name derives from the Latin lapis, meaning “stone,” and lazuli, meaning “azure,” which itself comes from the Persian ladjaward, derived in turn from the Sanskrit raja varta, meaning “portion of a king” (raja: king, varta: portion).
